A group from the popular Las Voces chorus chamber will present Renaissance Spring, a concert featuring a cappella and madrigal music from the 1600s and 1990s, on March 18 at Christ Episcopal Church just north of Downtown Temple.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. The cost of the performance is a $15 donation.
While the concert will primarily consist of ancient music from the 1600s, the group is throwing in a couple of fun tunes from the 1990s.
“Yes, we will be performing All Star by SmashMouth and Wanna Be My Lover by the Spice Girls,” said Ashley Carter, director and founder of Las Voces. “We will be doing English madrigal arrangements of these songs, and it will be quite entertaining.”
“It’s all meant in fun,” she said. “And since this is the day after St. Patrick’s Day, if you wear green we will enter you in a raffle for a gift basket donated by Temple businesses.”
“This is going to be an irreverent concert with a lot of love stories,” she said.
The group performing Renaissance Spring is smaller than the normal Las Voces chorus chamber, Carter said.
“Our number will be higher this summer,” she said. “Many of our members are choir directors in area schools, and they aren’t able to perform during the school year. But, they will be back this summer.”
“We will have seven accomplished vocalists from Central Texas, and they all perform on a very high level,” she said. “Las Voces is Spanish for The Voices. I have a dream to elevate the choral art in Central Texas, and a big part of our community is Spanish speaking.”
“This is an auditioned chorus, and we welcome newcomers,” she said. “If you would like to audition, please call me at (254) 350-3118.”
The group will be performing a mini-concert previewing Renaissance Spring at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 25 at the Temple Children’s Museum. The public is invited to this free event.
